In addition to the known effects on bone metabolism, vitamin D has a role in many biological processes. Vitamin D is indeed involved in muscle function, cognitive impairment and in the onset of diabetes. The analysis and interpretation of results of clinical trials lead, however, to conclusions often contradictory and difficult to interpret and apply in clinical practice. In recent years, the increased attention to the hypovitaminosis D and its prevention has resulted in an increase in demand of laboratory determination of vitamin D.
